Facilitators needed for Karen Armstrong Student Conference on Compassion in Religion

How does the value of compassion play out in the way you live your life?

Iona Pacific Inter-religious Centre, VST would like your assistance by participating as break-out session facilitators at a special event, the Karen Armstrong Student Conference on Compassion in Religion, featuring Karen Armstrong, TED Talk Prize Winner 2008, author of the books 12 Steps to a Compassionate Life and The Case For God as well as “one of the most provocative thinkers on the role of religion in modern life”.

The conference will be for up to 175 postsecondary students on Thursday, March 29, 2012 (9am-3pm) on the UBC Campus. On that day, under the principal sponsorship of the Centre for Dialogue at SFU (as part of the “Twelve Days of Compassion” featuring Karen Armstrong), Iona Pacific Inter-religious Centre will host a conference at Vancouver School of Theology on the UBC Campus on the theme of Compassion in Religion featuring Karen Armstrong. In addition to Karen Armstrong’s keynote remarks, a diverse group of religious community elders will share brief (5 minute) stories about compassion from each of their traditions.

Religiously diverse break-out groups of postsecondary students from local universities and colleges will come to together to brainstorm on how to bring out compassion in our respective communities and in our shared world, drawing on the resources of each of our traditions. The top couple of ideas from each group will be shared with the entire group when it reassembles in the chapel for a concluding session facilitated by Karen Armstrong.

The 12 or 13 break-out sessions will work best if you are leading (or co-leading) them! We are hoping that this conference will bring together emerging leaders like yourselves, so in addition to the ideas generated, the networking opportunities are significant.

If you are inclined to attend and help facilitate a break-out group, we will cover your registration fee (which includes the cost of lunch).

Please let us know if you are interested in bringing your gifts in facilitating to this event. Coordinating these logistics for Iona Pacific is our Youth Leadership Coordinator, Aliya Hirji. Feel free to contact Aliya directly at aliya@vst.edu.Thanks for considering this invitation and we hope to see you there!
